Legal Expertise

Philip M. Cohen is a veteran entertainment lawyer, having more than 35 years of experience in the legal trenches in Los Angeles.  Currently of counsel to Lapidus, Root and Sacharow, he is lead counsel and head of PMC Music Law, LLC.  Mr. Cohen specializes in music-related negotiations and agreements, including, but not limited to, music publishing, artist recording, songwriting, music distribution, music supervision, soundtrack albums and score composers.  He also has broad knowledge of union-related entertainment matters.  His clients include corporate entertainment companies as well as individual recording artists, songwriters, producers and composers.

 


Biography

Prior to forming PMC Music Law, Mr. Cohen was Senior Vice President and head of Music Business Affairs for the Music Department of Universal Pictures from 1995 through 2015, handling all business and legal aspects of music for the studio, including filmed entertainment and the theme parks. He coordinated with creative affairs, production executives, finance, marketing, producers and directors to ascertain music needs on projects, negotiated composer, music publishing, recording artist and soundtrack album agreements for all of Company’s motion pictures, interacted with record, music publishing, interactive and other motion picture companies, consulted with and advised other divisions within Universal Studios, including litigation, home video, consumer products, television, interactive, marketing and theme parks, on defining and resolving business and legal issues with respect to music and supervised a staff of attorneys, paralegals, licensors and secretaries.

From 1984- 1995, Mr. Cohen worked in the labor relations department of Sony Pictures, negotiating SAG, AFTRA, WGA, DGA, IA and AFM industry-wide agreements and then became assistant general counsel in Sony’s music department, charged with negotiating and drafting all motion picture-related music agreements.

Mr. Cohen received his Bachelor of Art Degree in English Literature and Journalism from New York University in 1981 and his Juris Doctorate from Loyola Law School, Los Angeles in 1989. He is a member of the State Bar of California.

Mr. Cohen has been a musician since the age of nine, played professionally from the age of 15, was signed to major label deals in his 20’s and continues to write, play and record music today.
